Holiday Break!

At the end of this week, we will go on winter break, but we still have several things going on at school that will require our attention so make sure you are at school. You don't want to come back in January, and realize you are already behind. The first thing of major importance is the review of our six weeks test. We need to understand if and where we went wrong and why. We also need to self evaluate and start taking advantage of Saturday tutorials. If there are concepts that you have not mastered, we will be reviewing them in tutorials, make sure to be there. I will be calling parents this week to make them aware of my recommendation for some of you to be here on Saturdays. Take it upon yourself to be there, without me having to pick up the phone. Remember, once we come back from break in January, we will have 3 months till you math kiddos have your test! Let's make those Saturdays count.

Reminders:
-Attendance counts. Be at school.
-Donate toys for our toy drive.
-2nd period social on Friday. Bring snacks.
-Early release Friday!  (Star Wars premiere!)

Countdown to the Holidays!

Our first holiday break is fast approaching! Be sure to come to school and pay attention in class so you can enjoy the break, worry free. This week we will be dissecting linear graphs and learning all the vocabulary associated with them. First up, slope, also known as the rate of change (from 7th grade). The slope of a graph tells us the steepness of a line and whether the rate of change is increasing or decreasing. Make sure you come to school everyday, so you don't miss out!

Reminders:

- Bus safety presentation on Monday at 9 am
- This is the 1st week of the 3rd six weeks, clean slate, lets make it count! Let go of  habits, and set higher goals!

Solving Equations

This week we will be working on solving equations. Its all about balance, like in life, equations have a purpose when both sides equal each other. Be sure to ask for help when you do not understand, and come in for tutoring even if its just for reinforcement. Let's achieve our goal of Level III performance!

Reminder: Algebra I enrichment project due Wednesday, October 21, 2015

Solving Literal Equations

This week we will be solving literal equations. Students have had to manipulate formulas to solve for different variables before, but this year, we will be using more complex equations that involve multiple variables.

Don't forget:
On Thursday, we will be taking a school field trip to UTRGV for HESTEC. Remember to get to school by 6:15 am. We will return back to campus by 3:30 pm.

Coming Up:
1st Six Weeks report card pick-up will be at Peter Piper Pizza from 4-6 pm. Come join us & stay for dinner! :)

2nd Six Weeks

The end of exam week means the beginning of a new grading period. This means we get to start new. Let's continue the good habits and let go of the bad,  and Mark growth in our academics. This six weeks we will be covering several new topics involving geometric figures, starting with surface area and progressing to volume and being able to compare and contrast between the two. We will be working with several hands on math labs to better grasp these concepts. Can't wait!

Don't forget we have the UTRGV HESTEC field trip coming up,  so make sure to turn in your $5 fee to your homeroom teacher. The itinerary for the day's activities promises to have some very interesting exhibits, so you definitely dont want to miss out!

Wrapping up

This week we will be covering absolute value equations and inequalities.  This will be the last topic taught before your common assessment next week.  The assessment schedule for next week is as follows:

Tuesday:  Reading
Wednesday:  Math/Algebra
Thursday: Social Studies
Friday:  Science

Solving Equations

This week we will be working with solving equations.  Students have been exposed to solving one and two step equations in previous years,  so we will begin with that to serve as a refresher for some,  and a reteach for others. We will then work our way through multi-step equations that will have variables on both sides of the equal sign. This will be a new concept for my students,  but I am confident that they will get it in no time. Equations are like the see-saw at the playground,  in order for it to be balanced, we must remember "whatever is done to one side,  must be done to the other side."

Falcons are EOC ready!

Time has come! Our mighty Falcons have been busy prepping for our Algebra I End of Course Exam.  As their teacher, its pretty amazing when my students' biggest worry is the fact that they are taking the exam on a computer, and not the actual test itself! This speaks volumes on their self confidence in Mathematics, which makes me so proud! EOC, Bring IT! Stay tuned for results in less than 1 week! :)

It's all about Quadratics!

This week in Algebra, we will be covering all that is Quadratic equations. I challenge you to go home and ask your parents what they remember about Algebra. Its probably this super long equation that they have no idea what it represents but they recall having to remember it! By the end of the week, we will have dissected that equation and YOU will be the ones going home and explaining it to YOUR parents! :)

Our Wish for you...

On behalf of the 8th grade team, we would like to let you, our students, know how proud we are of all the hard work you all have put forth, since day one. Even though there are days where we test each other’s’ patience or you catch us about to pull our hair out, we want to remind you that we have these frustrations because we want the best for you and from you.

Our hopes are that you will each reach your highest potential, and as a whole SOAR. It has been an honor watching you discover slowly but surely just how far your intelligence has taken you in just a short few months.

Now, the time has come to put all that daily brain exercise to use and show everyone at RGCCISD just how hard you’ve been working here at Ac2E Middle. So ‘hit those tests with your best shot’ and aim for your individual personal best.

Ac2E Middle School Pi Day!

The Math Department at Ac2E Middle School hosted its very first Pi Day this past Friday. Yes it was a little over a week early, but since we will be on Spring Break, we decided it was the perfect kick off to our mini break. Here are a plethora of pictures for you to enjoy!
Special thanks go out to the following people: Ac2E Middle School principal, Mrs. Gina Gonzalez, for her undying support and cooperation, Ac2E Middle School staff for their support of allowing students to be on a Math-Craze for the day :), HEB for their wonderful donation to make this day possible and Peter Piper Pizza for making our creative visions come to life! :). To our students, you all are great EVERYDAY, but your enthusiasm, and excitement for learning makes our hard work that much more rewarding! Being pied in the face was definitely a small price to pay for your hard work and dedication everyday! :)

Todays activities consisted of the following:
Pi Unscrambled: Students solved a wordsearch about Pi day terms.
Bulls-Eye: Students aimed for the bulls eye while singing the Pi Day song.
Hula Pi: Students investigated the circumference divided by the diameter of each hula, resulted in Pi.
Cookie Pi: Student solved for the area of 3 different cookies using Pi.
Pizza Pi: Students figured out the lowest cost per square inch of 3 different pizza sizes.
Pi Day Bracelets: Students took home a memorabilia of our event by creating their own Pi day bracelets. Each number was represented by a different color.
Pi Day Hats: Students figured out that the diameter of their head, multiplied by Pi, resulted in the perfect band for their hat, ie. Pi!
